You’ve no doubt heard the expression, “You can bet the rent on that.” But literally betting the rent… on any wagering proposition… is a dangerous game, and not only because you might lose. It’s also dangerous because if you know that the money you’re betting is needed for your mortgage or rent, your car payment or insurance payment, your week’s worth of groceries, or any other necessity, you’re going to bet stingily, or play scared, or make bad choices in your betting strategy. This is true in any wagering game that involves betting strategy… raising your bet when the time is right, betting more conservatively at other times.
It’s fine to try to win the rent or mortgage, if you know you have the rent (or mortgage) money safely in the bank and don’t need this win to make the payment. But if you need the money and you’re playing to pay the medical bills… or if you’re betting the money you’d earmarked for your insurance payment… you’re better off not playing at all. Come back another day when you can play with an easy mind, when you can formulate your betting strategy based strictly on gaming considerations and not on “Can I afford it?” or “I have to have this win!”
Come back on a day when you can dedicate a set amount of money— it could be $50, $500, $5000, or more— to your gaming enthusiasm. Then play to win, by all means— nobody plays intending to lose, after all!— but don’t play needing the win. There will also be available online casino deposit methods to use to play, regardless of the time of day.
And if Lady Luck isn’t smiling on you today (and we all have those days!), don’t exceed the amount of money you had designated, chasing your losses and betting another $1000 to try to recoup that first thousand that you’ve lost. Let it go. Walk away from your computer, or surf over to YouTube or some other non-gaming site… and come back to play some more another day.
Online wagering is supposed to be fun, as is any form of gaming. There’s a reason for the choice of verbiage in “playing the slots” (or “playing roulette” or, to get away from the online side of gaming for a minute, “playing the horses”). Once it becomes deadly serious, once winning becomes a “gotta” and not just a happy outcome, not only do you lose your perspective on your betting strategy and lose your nerve for making those big bets when the time is right, the whole experience stops being fun and starts being deadly serious.
Gaming is about enjoying yourself. So bet smart… bet what you can afford, when you can afford it. When you win, enjoy it; when you lose, shrug it off. And come back to play happily another day.
